One of the most common questions we get at Wild Blossom Balloons is, “How long will my balloons last?” The answer depends on several factors — mainly the type of balloon, where they’re displayed, and the environment they’re in. Let’s break it down so you know what to expect when planning your next event!

🌤 Latex Balloons and the Environment
Latex balloons are made from natural rubber, which means they break down over time. Here are a few key things that affect their lifespan:
1. Oxidation
Oxidation is what happens when latex balloons are exposed to oxygen and sunlight over time. You’ll notice a cloudy or matte look on the surface, especially on darker colors. This is completely normal and doesn’t mean your balloons are “deflating” — it’s just the natural aging process of latex.
2. Heat & Sunlight
Heat is the biggest enemy of latex balloons. When temperatures rise, the air inside expands, which can cause balloons to pop. Direct sunlight speeds up oxidation, fading colors and making the latex brittle. For outdoor events, we always recommend setting up in shaded areas whenever possible.
3. Air Conditioning & HVAC Systems
Indoors, balloons can be affected by HVAC systems that constantly circulate air. Air conditioning can make balloons shrink slightly as the cooler air causes the gases inside to contract. Likewise, heating can make them expand. Keeping them away from vents and direct air flow helps them last longer and stay looking full.

Foil (Mylar) Balloons: The Long-Lasting Option
Foil or Mylar balloons are made from a thin, metallic material that doesn’t oxidize like latex. They’re much more resistant to heat, sunlight, and humidity, which means they can stay looking great for days or even weeks when kept indoors!
If you’re hosting an event that needs long-lasting shine — like a corporate display or multi-day celebration — foil balloons are an excellent choice.
